”It’s way more fun when there are lots of us playing, because then there’s more competition.”

The world’s first interactive jungle gym

SPIDER is the first interactive jungle gym to integrate traditional outdoor play equipment with advanced computer technology. Ideal for children from 6 – 15 years, SPIDER is especially good at motivating older children to continue with active physical play.

18 electronic “satellites” – each containing lights, sounds and touch sensors – are placed around the jungle gym. SPIDER comes to life with flashing colours and playful beeps according to the game which the children choose themselves.

Children start the games by activating the four satellites located on SPIDER’s body, then continue the play by touching the satellites distributed all around SPIDER’s body and legs. The interactive fun motivates children to follow the game or to create their own rules.

SPIDER’s games are based on elements of the electronic games that fascinate children on computers and gaming consoles. Thus, SPIDER brings children’s virtual play patterns into the physical world, allowing them to move, compete, communicate about their play, negotiate new rules and develop the game as they go. A ”story starter”, SPIDER provides frames for play – children take care of the rest!

Of course, SPIDER can also be used as a regular jungle gym.

In 2006, SPIDER was awarded Denmark’s prestigious Ingeniørens Produktpris for innovative technology products.

Games

Swat the flies: The players make two teams - a red and a green. At random locations, SPIDER activates a red and a green satellite. Each team must find and touch the satellite of its colour by hand. This touch sets off the satellite at the next random location – and the game goes on until the winning team is first to find and touch 16 satellites.

Speedy:  For one person or a team. The game begins when SPIDER activates all satellites at once. The object of the game is to quickly move around SPIDER and touch as many satellites as possible within the set time limit. Whoever touches the most satellites wins the game.

Memory: Two persons or teams compete by taking turns to find satellites with identical colours. Whoever earns the most points wins the game.

PlayAlive continually develops new games. A subscription service allows owners to upgrade their SPIDER with new games.
